HooGenmaKen: Immersive, Dark Soundscapes Weaving a Journey of Transformation

Progressive dark music from Puebla, Mexico

Derived from Japanese, HooGenmaKen (鳳幻魔拳) evokes a sense of mythic power and transformation—"The Phoenix Illusion Demon Fist," a name that reflects both destruction and rebirth, illusion and revelation. It embodies the essence of the music: an intense, emotional journey through dark soundscapes and shifting realities.

HooGenmaKen is the solo project of Liliana Carral, an artist from Puebla, Mexico, crafting immersive instrumental music at the progressive edge of rock subgenres, from heavy space / stoner rock riffs, to symphonic strings and gothic dissonance, and cinematic storytelling.

Rooted in introspection and raw emotion, her compositions explore cycles of transformation, loss, and rebirth, weaving angular riffs, haunted textures, and dynamic intensity into a visceral sonic journey — one where silence speaks, and distortion heals.

Her upcoming album is a mythic journey of transformation, loss, and rebirth, set against the cosmic rhythms of fire festivals, solstices, and the shifting tides of light and darkness. Each track unfolds like a narrative, carrying listeners through evolving soundscapes where melody and chaos collide.

At the core of HooGenmaKen’s sound are Liliana’s intricate compositions, shaped by her bass work, programming, and creative vision. To bring these pieces to life in the studio, she worked with Fernando Balbuena (guitar recordings, engineering) and Juan Carlos Briones (drums), whose performances contribute to the dynamic contrasts—between power and fragility, tension and release, structure and disorder—while remaining faithful to her artistic direction.

HooGenmaKen is more than a musical project—it’s an exploration of storytelling through sound, where emotions unfold like scenes from an unseen film. With a vision that embraces both the expansive and the intimate, the music speaks to those who find solace in the shadows and strength in the storm
